Latin American and Caribbean studies

The Latin American and Caribbean studies collection focuses mainly on materials within the humanities, followed by the social sciences. The collection includes both published and unpublished materials in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French and a variety of indigenous languages such as Aymara, Guarani, Quechua and Nahautl.

Strong areas of the collection include Andean, Brazilian and Mexican history; Caribbean Studies particularly Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico; Latin American and Caribbean literature; bibliography; indigenous peoples, cultures, and languages; and Paraguay.

Increasingly, we collect materials on race, ethnicity and gender for all regions of Latin America, with a focus on Brazil and the Caribbean. We’ve also expanded to include more on Argentine culture and history, especially the military dictatorship period, as well as film studies and Judaica.

Important related collections

Items of special note include Latin American and Caribbean materials related to social protest part of the Labadie Collection. Also, a unique collection of Cuban handmade books part of the artists’ books collection. This includes titles made in the Matanzas province of Cuba under the imprint Ediciones Vigía, and titles made by Cuban artist Rolando Estévez under the El Fortín imprint.
