LGBTQ Studies

The LGBTQ studies collections support the study of sexuality in all academic disciplines and via a range of methodological approaches. 

Areas of focus include the lived experience of lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and transgender people in a range of contexts, including the intersections of gender, race, class, ability, and other categories of identity. Emerging areas of scholarly activity — such as non-binary understandings of gender and biological sex, asexuality studies, and more — are also of particular interest.

For collecting purposes, we pay special attention to the needs of members of our university community affiliated with the Women’s and Gender Studies Department and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. However, we recognize that scholars and students of sexuality studies are located in every discipline, and we seek to meet their needs regardless of affiliation.

The collection includes material in all formats, including print, electronic, video, microfilm, and other formats as needed. While the primary language is English, we acquire materials in other languages as necessary. 

Important related collections 

The library’s Special Collections Research Center holds a number of archival collections relevant to the study of sexuality, including the Labadie Collection and materials formerly held by the National Transgender Library and Archives.
