Lafer Preservation Internship Program

Gain real-world experience in the preservation of library collections. Student interns will take the lead in planning and implementing a preservation project with hands-on training in the library’s Preservation Services department.

About the program

The Mark and Theresa Lafer Preservation Internship Program matches students with preservation projects in the U-M Library, on campus, or in the Southeast Michigan community. 

The program is hosted by staff from the Preservation Services department who will provide overall guidance and mentorship for the internship. They will also work with the intern to ensure the work can be used for school credit if appropriate.

With generous support from the Mark and Theresa Lafer Conservation and Digital Preservation Internship Fund, this is a paid internship. Yearly rates are posted in the respective job description.  

Projects

The 2025 internship is intended for a person interested in pursuing a career in conservation, ideally through eventual admission to a graduate program in conservation. The intern will gain hands-on conservation experience in the book and paper conservation lab that cares for the rare and special collections of the U-M Library.  

Eligibility

To be eligible for the internship, candidates must possess a high school diploma and be currently enrolled in or have completed undergraduate-level courses or degrees. A strong interest in pursuing a career in conservation is essential.
